My Favorite Things

No, I’m not a huge fan of blue satin sashes or schnitzel, but I do have a list of my own! My friend and co-worker, Leslie, is moving oh so far away to Montana. This means that my days at work will be less, well… less. Knowing she was leaving, I asked her to send me a list of our favorite things that we had complied on a particularly crappy day. Listing them out and thinking about them when I’m feeling stressed and/or down helps tremendously. Because they are happy thoughts, I wanted to share a few of them here.

Flowers from my garden already! Aren't they gorgeous!

A Few of My Favorite Things

  • Finishing a piece of art work – Few things can give me such a feeling of accomplishment and completion than starting with random beads, wire and string and ending up with something beautiful that you can share can.
  • Harold and Maude- I have debated writing an entire blog about how much I love this movie. If you haven’t seen it, please do. The characters remind me what it is to live on days that I feel defeated. The movie emphasizes the beauty in the simple things, and teaches us to learn to let go. Letting go isn’t always a bad thing, and our letting go often helps others to hold on and hang in there. I'm going to list a few quotes from it at the end of this blog.
  • Sunflowers- It was after watching Harold and Maude that I realized just how much I love sunflowers. They are bold, beautiful and bright. These flowers can stand out, even if there is only one, and they stand tall. As Maude would say, “They're so tall and simple.
  • Clean Sheets/My Bed- My bedroom is my sanctuary. It is my place of rest and I keep it clean and clutter free. The only electronic device I have in there is my alarm clock which I’ve thought about moving to another room, but I’m too much of a snooze queen to make that kind of commitment. You can't get the same quality of sleep when you have a TV, radio, phone, etc., 5 feet from your bed. Electronics let off Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs) that can disrupt your sleeping patterns. When I crawl into bed the first time after changing my sheets, I feel a sort of renewal. Everything is fresh, and I am about to regenerate.
  • Scents- Oh, there are so many I love. Fresh mowed lawns, the soil as I am gardening, lavender, sauteeing mushrooms and garlic, gasoline, plastic (like the kind they use in fancy Ads) or shower curtains, honey…. I could go on forever.
  • When someone tells me that I’ve made a difference in their lives- Enough said. It’s amazing.
  • Popcorn (buttered and salted) + Movie + Blanket + Couch. It's the best way to veg!
  • Thunderstorms, provided I am not stuck outside somewhere. Call me cheesy, but I think there's something magical about them.
  • Irish Brogues- There's something so warm and natural about them. There ain't no people like Irish people!
  • Flipflops- Easy on, easy off and comfy.

That's it for now. I'll leave you with some Harold and Maude quotes.

Maude: Dreyfus once wrote from Devil's Island that he would see the most glorious birds. Many years later in Brittany he realized they had only been seagulls... For me they will always be - *glorious* birds.

Harold: Maude.
Maude: Hmm?
Harold: Do you pray?
Maude: Pray? No. I communicate.
Harold: With God?
Maude: With *life*.

Maude: Vice, Virtue. It's best not to be too moral. You cheat yourself out of too much *life*. Aim above morality. If you apply that to life, then you're bound to live life fully.

Maude: You know, at one time, I used to break into pet shops to liberate the canaries. But I decided that was an idea way before its time. Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing... oh my, how the world still dearly loves a cage.

Some of my favorite things are:
My monkey's Lily and Rupey.
My friends and family - who I'll miss dearly in MT!
Cheese, garlic, bread, my mom's salsa - food in general.
Listening to Jason Mraz while dancing in my underwear.
Crawling into a nicely made bed with fresh clean sheets.
Getting mail that isn't a bill - I'll be sending more letters and cards since I won't have a phone! (Which reminds me, I need your address:)

I'm such a loser. I forgot to mention cheese, which is absolutely my favorite food. I recently had Iberico which was awseome, but brie is my all time favorite!

You about picking the loose hair out of Foose's fur. You do seem to get a sick sort of pleasure sitting there and doing that.

Or watching the two of them fight it out in the middle of the living room... that's definitely something we both will stop what we're doing to watch.
